Build a plan

It is 4th and goal. Your team is down by four points. You need to score a touchdown to win the game. Time is running out. You can’t hear the next play from the sideline. What are you going to do?

Not having a plan for your SEO campaign is a sure-fire way to lose page rankings and even could cost you tons of money in the process.

Kristopher B. Jones offers some tips from his book Search Engine Optimization: Your Visual Blueprint for Effective Internet Marketing 2nd ed.

“Setting realistic goals for your search-engine-optimization project ensures that you stay on task and keep focused despite the many mountains and valleys you are sure to encounter.”

SEO is an inexact science. There is no guarantee that even if you follow all of the best practices in the world that it will get you front-page rankings. But if you build a plan, you are less likely to fall into pitfalls that will end your SEO campaign.

BEWARE:

Spammers who manipulate the search engines with content generators and spam links from other Web sites run the risk of getting penalties from the search engines.

So, come up with a realistic plan for your SEO strategy. Set up goals for the short and long term. Are you trying to increase traffic? Are you trying to increase sales? Are you trying to establish your brand?

“Plan out what strategies you are going to implement, how you are going to implement them, and when you plan to have the projects completed.”
